Selena Gomez: Instagram's most-followed celebrity on how she handles fame

Pop star Selena Gomez explains how music helped her through a rough year, how social media helps her handle fame, and giving birth in her new film.
"I'm so exhausted right now. I would love to fall asleep on your lap."
Selena Gomez is officially cream-crackered. The pop star is making a brief pit-stop in London as she jets home to Los Angeles from Paris Fashion Week - but rather than take it easy, she's popped into BBC Radio 1 at the break of dawn.
There, Nick Grimshaw teases the singer about an over-enthusiastic fan who accosted her at the Eurostar terminal five hours earlier.
"He kissed me, and then he held my hand as I walked through the train station," she laughs. "He was actually very nice. He just wanted to date me for a couple of seconds."
Photos of the encounter show Gomez taking it all in her stride. But then, she's an old pro.
She first stepped into the limelight at the age of seven, in kids' TV show Barney & Friends. By the age of 14, she was known to millions as Alex Russo, the sarcastic wizard-in-training on Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place.

When the show ended in 2008, Gomez pursued parallel careers in film, pop and fashion, as well as becoming a Unicef spokesperson; but that was all overshadowed by her three-year relationship with Justin Bieber. (It still makes headlines now, more than a year after they broke up.)During the course of our interview, she never mentions Bieber by name, trusting (correctly) that people will fill in the gaps when she discusses the "chaos" in her personal life last year.
But it wasn't just her relationship status that went through an upheaval. The 23-year-old asked her mother to step aside as her manager, and revealed that a much-publicised "stint in rehab" was actually a course of chemotherapy to battle the auto-immune condition Lupus.
With the disease in remission, she went back to the recording studio to make her fourth album.
"I found music to be a real outlet," she says. "I needed a voice in all of the noise."
The result was Revival, an unexpectedly assured collection of grown-up pop music. Its release was trailed by Good For You, a steamy, sotto voce ballad, where Gomez leaves her "dress a mess on the floor".
It instantly changed perceptions of the former teen star and, as she tells the BBC, she's keen to capitalise on the momentum.

A lot of people have assumed Revival is your first album - but it's not. I've appreciated that reaction because I released my first album when I was 14. What on earth was I going to be talking about at 14? I think one of the songs on that album was called Crush. I mean, that's as intense as my emotions became.
That's probably why Good For You took people by surprise.
Definitely.
What did you think when you first heard it?
It was the second song that was submitted to me. There was no track, it was very, very raw. Just singing. But it was one of those songs that I felt so deeply. I had previously released [Bieber-inspired break-up song] The Heart Wants What It Wants, which was very sad and vulnerable. It was good for me to get that off my chest but I was in a place where I felt this sense of empowerment and Good For You expressed that perfectly.
Were you taken aback when people accused the lyrics and the video of catering to male fantasies?
No, I wasn't because, first off, anything that I do people are going to say something. The video isn't about me catering to any sort of audience. I'm in jeans and a T-shirt, or I feel sexy in a silk robe. It's just my definition of a woman being beautiful. I don't think there's anything wrong with embracing that.
You say that people - and I assume you mean the press - always have an opinion, no matter what you do. Is that what Kill 'Em With Kindness is about?
Oh yeah, that's my theme song for life! I contemplated tattooing it on me at one point.
Most of the time, people say negative things for a reaction and I can't even bear to give them the satisfaction. So there's something that I gain from feeling like I'm the bigger person, from walking away from a situation.

How often are you poised over the send button on Twitter, thinking: "I'll tell you a thing or two?"Oh, I've gone off, don't get me wrong. I'm not perfect!
Does social media take some of the power away from gossip sites like TMZ and Hollywood Life?
Absolutely. It's insane how much press my Instagram will get [With 69.5m followers, Gomez is Instagram's most popular celebrity]. It's weird, in a way, that I can dictate the agenda - but I love being able to have a say in all of that. Especially having being raised in it.
Have you seen the darker side of the industry? Do you look at what's happening to Kesha and see elements of the business you recognise?
I'm very sensitive to that subject. It's difficult to be a woman in this business, and I don't wish those situations upon anyone. but I've been very fortunate. For years, my life was Disney Channel and I had a wonderful experience. Then, after that, I had my mom with me at all times.

Your new single, (Can't Keep My) Hands To Myself, is really taking off in the UK. There's a moment where you sing - "I mean I could, but why would I want to?" - that turns the lyric completely on it's head. When that was written in the studio, did you know it was special?Oh yes, instantly. Julia Michaels is one of my writing partners and she's 22 - so she's actually younger than me - and we're extremely similar when it comes to how playful we are. We just thought, how could we make a sexy song just stop and take control of it?
It's a little bit of a talking track and I loved that because it takes my voice into a whole different area.
You sing in a lower register to most pop artists…
Yeah, and I talk in a deep register. That's where I'm most comfortable, that's where I shine. I think that's what separates me.
That's what was cool about this album - I got to learn what my strength was as an artist. Before, I would think, "if I can't hit this note, that must mean I'm not a good singer," and that wasn't ever the case.
You recently appeared in Adam McKay's movie about the financial crisis, The Big Short, talking about collateralised debt obligations. Can you still explain them today?
Absolutely not! When the producers called me, I said: "I have no idea what I'm talking about. And I don't know if that's sad, or if it's scaring me in the right way."
That's the point of the film, I guess. All of our lives are affected by these big financial institutions, and we don't really understand how or why they work the way they do.
That's the case in a lot of aspects of life, especially for my generation. The kids are fixing their eyes on social media, and the stories they're looking at may not be the most important things.
I'm guilty of that, too, Do you want to look at Instagram or the news? It's a difficult, and weird, situation.

Your next film role is in James Franco's In Dubious Battle, where you play a mother who gives birth. How did you research that?I was there when my mom gave birth to my little sister, so I got a little bit of the idea. Hopefully I did it justice. There was a lot of screaming.
But filming that scene was very awkward, I have to be honest. People were down there in that area, looking and shooting. It was very weird.
You're also producing the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why - and you recently signed up Spotlight's Tom McCarthy as a director. That's quite a coup.
I'm hugely excited. My mom found this book about four or five years ago - and we originally wanted to adapt it into a film for me to star in but, you know, it took a couple of years. I couldn't be more thrilled that we got him - especially in this moment.
Did you sign him before or after he won the Oscar?
It was right before - so the ceremony was really exciting. I was tweeting and watching along like I knew him. I was so proud of him!
At this point, you're an executive producer on the series - you're no longer going to star in it?
Correct. I don't know if there's anything I could do acting-wise, but I want to be part of the music.

Meanwhile, you're already working on the follow-up to Revival. Why so fast?I think my label wanted me to start last year! But releasing this record made me feel liberated. I definitely think I've found my own lane and I'm excited to explore that.
Will you work with the same team?
Absolutely. I want to fly a few of my writers out and just be on the tour bus with them, writing and creating. It's funny - I only wrote six songs for Revival but I find it hard to listen to [other people's] demos now. Now that I've been able to tap into that creativity, I'm kind of addicted to it.
Hands To Myself is released on 25 March by Polydor Records. Selena Gomez goes on tour from May. source

Our 10-year-old junior reviewer has things to say about Marvel Battlegrounds 13-to-1 gender split

Our 10-year-old junior reviewer has things to say about Marvel Battlegrounds 13-to-1 gender split

The Marvel Battlegrounds playset for Disney Infinity 3.0 delivers frenetic action four up to fourplayers, but our young reviewer was miffed about the lack of female representation.

Disney Infinity 3.0 may have been sharply focused on Star Wars, but its expansion content is branching out to other Disney brands, including Marvel.
Disney Interactive announced earlier this month that it’s moving away from the annualized release model the toys-to-life franchise has followed for the past few years – meaning there won’t be a Disney Infinity 4.0 this fall – but that it’s not slowing the release of new playsets and collectible characters. New content based on the recently released film Zootopia and the upcoming live action movie The Jungle Book are already in the works.
Launching even before these newly announced playsets is Marvel Battlegrounds, which landed this week.
Having already released a few Marvel-themed action-adventure playsets tied to Disney Infinity 2.0 (plus loads of superhero characters), series steward Avalanche Software went a different route with Battlegrounds, making it a Super Smash Bros.-esque brawler that lets kids pick four heroes and/or villains from a roster of more than two-dozen and drop them into small but dynamic battlegrounds set on the Earth, the moon, and beyond.
As I often do with games meant for kids, I’m going to let my 10-year-old daughter do most of the critiquing on this one via a lightly edited transcript of our post-game conversation.
Here’s the TL;DR version: She’s having a lot of fun, but she’s also starting to get fed up with the lack of female representation in Disney Infinity’s Marvel playsets.
Me: So, what do you…
Daughter: THERE ARE ONLY TWO GIRL SUPERHEROES IN THIS GAME! Literally only two. Out of 26. Gamora and Black Widow. That’s just sad. And they tease us again with other girl heroes, like Captain Marvel. She’s in it but you can’t play as her. They really need to make more female heroes to collect, like female Thor, Wasp, Miss Marvel – and I know you think Miss Marvel’s the same as Captain Marvel, dad, but she’s not. How can they team up in the comics if they’re the same person?
Okay, I’m with you. A thirteen-to-one gender imbalance is a bit shameful. They really do need to work on getting more women in the Marvel playsets. But, that aside, what do you think of the action?
Well, I really like to jam buttons, so I’m having a lot of fun. You can do really cool actions just by accident without meaning to, and they look super professional. That makes me happy in my heart. It’s also good for relieving stress, just mashing buttons. And it can be the funnest way to settle arguments. We’re going to play for who folds laundry next time, dad.
I guess that means I’ll be folding laundry. But I always do anyway. Battlegrounds is in some ways the smallest Disney Infinity playset yet – the story mode, which is just a series of brawls, takes under an hour to finish, not including bonus challenges. But in another way it might be the one kids end up spending the most time with.
Yeah, it’s good for having friends over. For the first time in Disney Infinity – I think? – you can play with four people. Four people playing together is the best way to play a game like this. All of the battles are super short, but they’re super fun and you can play for a long time without realizing it … um, though I don’t know if parents will think that’s a good thing.
You’re a much bigger Super Smash Bros. fan than I am. How do these two games compare?
I personally like Super Smash Bros. a bit more. There’s just a little more to it. More characters – and you can create your own – more battlegrounds, more options, like tag team. I’d like to have tag team in Marvel Battlegrounds because then you could put two good characters against two evil characters, like a real battle that could happen in the Marvel universe. And if one of your friends is feeling really tough or everyone else is mad at her you could just team up against her.
Remind me not to make you mad at me while playing. But there are quite a few different modes in Battlegrounds. My favourite is Rumble, where you have unlimited lives and just see how many enemies you can knock out within the time limit. It’s not the default main mode, but it just seems like the most natural fit for what they’re trying to do. Do you have a favourite?
I have two favourites. My first favourite is Rumble, because it’s the most like Super Smash Bros. And I like Hero of the Hill, because you just get to stand in a circle and beat people up. That’s quality entertainment.
What do you think of this playset’s move to bank experience points, then spend them on whichever character you like? We haven’t seen that before.
It’s an interesting idea, and it could be good, but it’s not right now. When we did it you stole all of the experience points we earned together and spent them on Captain America. I hate Captain America. I agree with what Tony Stark says in the commercial for the new movie ; I want to punch Captain America in his perfect teeth. It’s true, you know? I do. Banking experience points could be better, though. You could take all the experience points and just split them up between characters. Or they could just keep what they earned in each fight. That’d be fairest.
I actually think they did the banking thing to give us more freedom. This is a fighting game and it requires balance, so all of the characters’ skills and abilities are set. You can’t upgrade them. Instead, they let us bank experience and upgrade the characters’ abilities outside the story and versus modes, in the Toy Box. But on the topic of balancing, do you find any characters particularly overpowered? I noticed that even though you like Gamora and Black Widow most you were partial to using Venom.
I use Venom because he’s one of the three most muscle-y characters available, and pretty fast for being so big. He was the only way I could beat you, because you always play as Hulk Buster. After you lost playing as a wimpy character you said “I’m done playing around,” and put Hulk Buster on the portal and didn’t take him off for the rest of the afternoon. So unfair. Until I started using Venom. Then you couldn’t beat me. It really feels to me like the characters are not very well balanced, because some characters just seem way tougher. Like, Rocket fighting the Hulk just doesn’t feel fair. The Hulk is slow, but waaay more powerful.
One of the smartest things they did with this playset is allow players to use characters they haven’t purchased. You use tokens to do this. A few new ones are free every week, and you can earn tokens in the story mode to try any other ones you don’t have.
Yeah, it’s really easy to use tokens in story mode. Every level or challenge you play will get you one token. And in the beginning you get 15 tokens for free. It’s great for testing characters you don’t have so you can see if you want to get them.
So, there’s not going to be a Disney Infinity 4.0 this year. They’re just planning on expanding 3.0 with new playsets and characters. Are you fine with that?
I’m not going to have a heart attack over it or anything. They’re off to an okay start with Marvel Battlegrounds, but I expect things to get better. I think they should do something with X-men, because they haven’t focused on them before. That’d be a step up. They could also do more Pixar, like WALL-E and Up.
Well, X-men isn’t really owned by Disney that’s a talk for another time, maybe just before you decide you want to be a lawyer – but there’s certainly no shortage of Disney properties to draw from.
True dat, dad. True dat.

Farmer Wants a Wife contestants claim show ‘destroyed’ their lives

A TRAIL of heartbreak has been left by TV show The Farmer Wants a Wife, with contestants claiming it has torn their lives apart.

It may be hailed as Australia’s “most heartwarming and successful television dating program” by Channel Nine and production company FremantleMedia Australia, but the reality this year has been quite different.

Several contestants and sources close to the show have spoken to The Courier-Mail and, despite lots of hugs and kisses, claims that can be revealed include:

● At least three of the six final couples have split.

● A farmer was hospitalised after the show after struggling to cope.

● One of the contestants has stated that the dating show “destroyed her life”.

Khloe Kardashian, James Harden Still Happening

Getting the exclusive shot of Khloe Kardashian and James Harden together again, E! proves the couple is powering on, despite rumors she and husband Lamar Odom have reunited.

“Heading to meet a group of friends for an event at Lure Nightclub in Hollywood on Sunday night, the reality star and her NBA boyfriend were photographed for the first time since Odom was found unconscious in a Las Vegas brothel on Oct. 13,” reports E! “They appeared to be doing well, unafraid to show their affection for each other as a source tells us they held hands walking into the event and throughout most of the night.”

A few weeks ago Kardashian gave People the exclusive, explaining she was staying by her husband’s side for better or worse,  but not for love. “It’s out in the media that we are back together, but I wish people understood that’s not in our thought process right now,” said Kardashian. According to the 31-year-old starlet, being by her husband’s side by not signing the papers was because of “too many medical things.”

“It’s not even in our brains thinking about us as a couple or having a relationship right now,” she said. Apparently the truth, she and Harden had no problem walking in the club together, though they reportedly left separately.  “Last week she managed to quickly jet off to one of his games in Houston before returning to Los Angeles to take care of Odom over Halloween weekend,” reports E!

Yet while she cannot commit her love to her husband, she also can’t plead her passion to Harden either. “He’s been great with me, and I’m just allowing everything to unfold,” said Kardashian in her People exclusive. “If it’s ever too overwhelming [for him], then I understand that as well.” By the looks of it on their Sunday night date, Harden and her holding hands seemed to say the two are just fine, with no love lost since her husband’s drug overdose.

She even took to Twitterverse to express her fondness, captioning a shot of Harden with “@jharden13 side eye game is strong! I love this video!” to describe the player’s frustration during a post-game interview.

Also following the love triangle, Us Weekly reports how Kardashian “clad in a long coat and leather thigh-high boots” looked hot aside her 26-year-old beau Sunday night. Speaking of clothes, or lack thereof, Kardashian’s new book Strong Looks Better Naked has the celebrity sister to Kim in the spotlight more than any of her other famed loved ones. But with all the rumors among the family clan, it is hard to keep up with what is true or not.

“Prior to Odom’s birthday, the Lakers alum needed space from Kardashian, a source exclusively told Us Weekly,” reported the media outlet, adding “According to the insider, Odom had told Kardashian to get out and that he needed to be alone. A Kardashian source denied the incident.”

Needless to say, more photos will continue to tell the truth.
